Yikes! Winning awards recognition seems to send some actors down the wrong path; maybe there’s nowhere further to go in terms of credibility, or maybe the bankability of a performer reaches the point where money drowns out sense. Either way, Matthew McConaughey’s attempts to destroy his own considerable reputation as an Oscar-winning actor reach midlife-crisis Nicolas Cage levels with writer/director Steven Knight’s Serenity, a twisty-turny sea-bound thriller that jumps the shark in brain-bending style.
The trailers promise a straightforward Dead Calm murder-mystery, with the star bringing his handsome good looks to the role of Baker Dill, a sea-captain eking out a living on his boat Serenity in and around the posh resort of Plymouth Island. Femme fatale Karen (an OTT Anne Hathaway) seems to be luring him into something, but what? When Karen’s boorish husband Frank (Jason Clarke) turns up, Baker Dill sees a chance to set Karen free, but is she all that she seems?
Once the final twist of Serenity has unspooled, audiences are likely to feel that none of the characters are what they seem, and not in a good way; I guess enough years have passed to add a few spoilers here and reveal that Baker Dill discovers that he is actually part of a video game simulation, and while that’s a twist that might have worked on paper, it really doesn’t work at all in Serenity, and it still doesn’t work in last years Harry Styles shambles Don’t Worry Darling. ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made of’ says Jeremy Strong who, like Diane Lane, probably just can’t believe they got dragged into this…’
Films like The Magus or Jacob’s Ladder have toyed with varying degrees of success with the nature of reality, but the over-heated melodrama in Serenity gives way to abstract cosmic ruminations in a glib, silly way that should provoke mirth in all those unlucky enough to set sail with her crew. That said, a top cast and plush production values help give Serenity some kind of attractive sheen, but as far as making any sense goes, as Hudson said in Aliens, it’s game over, man. game over.
Dumb movie with an even dumber twist. Comes completely out of nowhere.
Is the correct answer. Unfortunately, this looks like the first of a few ‘it was all a game’ movies…
Nope. This is not the Serenity I wanted.
You wanted this?

Nope. Eyerolls.
Always.
Seemed late to the party with the whole “reality is a simulacrum” idea, and didn’t have a very refreshing take on the idea either. Interesting how hungry people seem to be not just for escape but for some kind of denial that what they’re living in is reality. In any event, I’d mostly forgotten it by now.
Are you living in a simulation? What is it like?
Not bad. Just had breakfast with Anne Hathaway.
What game did you play?
Pass the slipper. Not challenging with only two people, but still fun.
Pics?
You’d have to check one of those disreputable celeb hack sites.
Sigh. I don’t believe you are hanging with Anne Hathaway. Wasn’t she Shakespeare?
Are you saying Hathaway is disreputable?
Serenity was a GREAT movie. When Wash died, it really moved me. And getting a follow up, no matter how bittersweet, for Firefly was what we wanted.
What’s that you say? This isn’t THAT Serenity? Well, screw this movie then. It can take a flying leap straight into a reaver’s mouth…
I thought it was going to be the proper Serenity too Booky! Very disappointed in this imposter.
The Firefly Serenity was better than this. And I don’t think I could say that about many movies.
I think we are all in concurment. Firefly Serenity for the win!
Ok, well, I might just review that film due to demand.
Excellent. Will look forward to it.
Darn tootin’!
Where’s Nathan Fillion when we really need him?
Percy Jackson movies?
I read the books. He wasn’t in any of them….
He was in the movies!
What are these “movies” you mention? Is that the new fad among kids today, like velcro straps on shoes?
Sigh. Like Shrek Forever After?
Sounds like a wonderful movie. Are you going to review it?
😉
Maybe.
It gets my vote…
Indeed!
The other Serenity was better than this one.
I saw the other Serenity too. FaCt!
But, is it a bona fida BoBa FaCt?
