Julianne Moore’s turn in Still Alice won her an Oscar, but she’s got a great body of work as a performer; Gloria Bell sees Chilean direcror Sebastian Leilo remaking his own film to good effect, with Moore ideal as a divorcee who tries to escape from the duties of motherhood by entering the LA dating scene. It’s no great surprise that her relationship with paintball-king John Turturro isn’t plain sailing, but at least it gets her away from her son ( Michael Cera) and his tricky home life. Gloria Bell is a character study in the old style, with some nice cameos (Sean Astin, Jeanne Tripplehorn) and a couple of rousing scenes at the end; Moore’s work hasn’t always had the audience it deserves, but she’s positively radiant here.
