Also known under the more ponderous title The Last Days of Man on Earth, Robert Fuest’s adaptaion of sci-fi writer Michael Moorcock’s novel has kitsch style to spare. Jon Finch plays Jerry Cornelius, searching for the mysterious Final Programme developed by his father, and up against Miss Brunner (Jenny Runacre) who actually consumes her lovers whole. Somewhere between a low-budget Bond spoof and The Avengers tv show, The Final Programme is pure 1973, pop-art madness embellished by a slew of great character actors including Hugh Griffith, Patrick Magee, Harry Andrews, Julie Ege and Sterling Hayden. The final monkey-related reference to 2001 tops things off nicely; this is a forgotten classic of exploratory sci-fi fancy.
