Philosopher Alain de Botton observed that most romantic films only deal with the initial courtship; the real truth about romance is not about how the first obstacles are overcome, but how a relationship is held together. Over two decades, Richard Linklater’s creations, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) have been the subject of three semi-improvised movies; they step of a train in Vienna and enjoy a night under the stars, they meet again in Paris and rekindle their relationship, and lastly they holiday in Greece with their family, hoping to revive some of the old magic. A unique cinematic achievement, the Before Sunrise trilogy are the perfect films for couples; repeated viewings give subtle insights into the precarious but vital connection between men and women as they grow older.
