In A World…2013 ****

Like Don La Fontaine, the late Hal Douglas was a king of movie trailers, and his gravelly intonation of the world ‘in a world…’ started many a trailer in the 80’s and 90’s. Writer/director Lake Bell uses the idea of rivalry between the two men as a jumping off point for an acerbic look at the competitive nature of trailer voice-overs, casting herself as Carol, the daughter of voice-over king Sam (Fred Melamed). Fred doesn’t seem keen to give up his throne, but Carol sets out to strike a blow for the female voice by taking him on at his own game. She’s hampered by underlying tension between her sister Dani (Michela Watkins) and her husband Moe (Rob Corddry), and also suffers angst about romance with Louis (Demetri Martin). In A World…is a sprightly indie comedy, with smart comedy performances from the cast, notably Bell who has crafted a story to her own likable talents; she makes a valid point about male domination of the media while admitting the pitfalls that can befall  a woman who speaks up for herself.
