Yanks 1979 ***

A pre-Chariots of Fire Colin Welland write the script for John Schlesinger’s 1979 wartime drama, taking its title from the British slang for American soldiers. Stationed in Britain, Matt Dyson (Richard Gere) and John (William Devane) develop relationships with local gals Helen (Vanessa Redgrave) and Jean (Lisa Eichhorn). With a cast list separated into British and American, Schlesinger’s film makes the most of cultural differences, even if the ending is pure Hollywood moonshine. Small roles for Rachel Roberts and singer Annie Ross add incidental value, and although it never visits the battlefield, Yanks is a powerful drama of life during wartime.
