The Brothers McMullen 1995 ***

The first part of writer/director Edward Burns’s Long Island trilogy may be a bit technically rough, but it’s a well-acted and thoughtful look at three Irish-American brothers and their romantic and career problems. Burns, Mike McGlore and Jack Mulcahy play the brothers, introduced staring at their recently deceased father’s grave and wondering what to do with their lives. Catholicism, guilt and a potential film-making career are all issues in Burns’s heartfelt film, which offers the kind of honest, unforced dialogue few Hollywood films can match. Burns has fashioned a Hollywood career since, but few of his films have matched the quality of his Sundance-winning debut.
