Quest For Fire 1981 ***

A caveman film without dinosaurs, and with Anthony Burgess contributing the primitive language, Jean Jacques Annaud’s 1981 film is a cut above most prehistoric hokum. Everett McGill plays Naoh, a Scottish homo-sapien who falls for the comely Ika (Rae Dawn Chong), but has to prove his worth to the tribe by helping out on their mission to find and harness the power of fire in a race to best their Neanderthal neighbors. Mammoths, saber-toothed tigers and other local colour are capably rendered, Ron Perlman makes an ideal caveman, and the locations, captured in Scotland, Canada and Kenya are unfamiliar and exotic. Adapted from a novel by JH Rosnay Jr.
