I Love You Man 2009 ****

The Judd Apatow bromance genre was substantial enough to spawn imitations, and writer/director John Hamburg delivered an accomplished variation is 2009 comedy I Love You Man. Making the most of sunny Santa Monica locations, Hamburg’s film, co-written with Larry Levin, is about mild-mannered Peter (Paul Rudd) who needs to find the right best man for his wedding to Zooey (Rashida Jones). Step forward Sydney (Jason Segal), a man’s man who lives life in a uniquely testosterone fuelled fashion and who teaches Peter about how to let go of his inhibitions. There’s cheerful support from TV stars old and new, from Brooklyn 911’s Andy Samberg to The Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno, and while I Love You Man doesn’t hold back on crude moments of gross-out humour, it’s restrained by a good-hearted feeling for the excesses of single men.
