Sans Soleil 1983 ****

Chris Marker was a French writer/director best known for La Jetee, a short film Terry Gilliam filmed as 12 Monkeys. His 1983 documentary Sans Soleil, is a similarly lyrical piece, a video-travelogue which mixes sociological travelogue scenes of Japan with contemplation of the meaning of cats, memory, robots and Alfred Hitchcock. While much of Marker’s later work is quite inaccessible, Sans Soleil’s poetic qualities seem remarkably modern; it’s seems incredible that Marker could create a video diary of such scope back in 1983. One scene of a giraffe being killed may be a little too much for sensitive souls, but if you can shield your eyes for a few moments, the remainder of Sans Soleil will blow your mind in several ways.
