Last Passenger 2013 ****

The spirit of the British B Movie is alive and well in writer/director Omid Nooshin’s Last Passenger, a low-budget action film with an ingenious premise. Dr Lewis Shaler (Dougray Scott) is one of a small group of passengers heading out of London by train, only to find that the driver has been replace by a terrorist intent on destroying it. The dawning realisation of the deadly predicament is well handled, and while Nooshin does a good job in simulating the environment of the speeding train, he also throws in a few effective ‘money shots’ as the train smashes through unwary automobiles. The identify and motivations of the killer are wisely kept ambiguous, making Last Passenger something of a companion to Steven Spielberg’s Duel as a story of innocents trapped under by an seemingly unstoppable force.
