The Dead 1987 *****

John Huston adapting James Joyce was a mouth-watering prospect, and this film of The Dead in 1987 makes good on that promise. A gathering of Dubliners in Turn-of the 1900’s Ireland is captured in all it’s drunken comedy and pathos, with much merriment and intrigue, not least between Gabriel Conroy and his wife Gretta, played by Donal McCann and Anjelica Huston. The singing and cavorting hides a heart-breaking secret, and the snowy final scenes of The Dead strike a resonant chord. John Huston dies soon after The Dead was completed, but this perfect film is a fine way to remember him. Screenplay by Tony Huston.
