The Counsellor 2013 ***

Ridley Scott directing an original script by No Country For Old Men’s Cormac McCarthy, complete with a top-notch cast, made for a juicy proposition, but The Counsellor was met with derision when in appeared in 2013. The reputations of all concerned seemed to have worked against the film, which is moody, elliptical and far for mainstream in content. Michael Fassbender is the lawyer who unwisely hooks up with Javier Bardem’s drug-dealer and his wife Cameron Diaz. Saddled with a trailer that promises conventional action, The Counsellor delivers anything but, but McCarthy’s unique dialogue makes for a strangely-compelling mood piece that never explains itself, but leaves the audience with plenty to ponder.
