Writer/director Shane Carruth’s follow-up to time-travel opus Primer is a low-budget sci-fi drama with big ideas. Carruth also stars as Jeff, a young man who meets Kris (Amy Seimetz). Both of them are struggling to deal with reality, as a result of undergoing a strange experimentation process that involves creatures that crawl under their skin. By sharing their collected memories, Jeff and Kris track down the culprits to a pig farm, where they discover a sinister mind-control experiment. The synopsis might sound hokey, but Upstream Color’s sensational visuals and high-minded plot make for a hypnotic watch, and proves that good sci-fi can ask questions that most supposedly serious dramas shy away from.
