Once you get the idea that its going to finish where most films start, there’s plenty to enjoy in Colin Trevorrow’s low-budget drama with a sci-fi twist. Aubrey Plaza plays one of three journalists who head to the backwoods to investigate a strange situations vacant ad in the local press. Placed by the eccentric Kenneth (Mark Duplass), the ad is looking for a volunteer for a time travel experience, but Safety Not Guaranteed is not a time-travelling adventure, but rather a contemplation of what the preparations for one might be like. The ambiguity of whether Kenneth’s offer is real or not is the key to the character-based drama, and builds to a satisfying pay-off. Trevorrow was offered Jurassic Park IV as a result of his sure touch of this original story.
