Writer/director Dylan Kidd made a striking debut with this 2002 film, featuring a particularly youthful Jesse (The Social Network) Eisenberg as Nick, a teenager taken for a night on the town by his louche-living uncle Roger (Campbell Scott). Women are the target, with Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth “Showgirls’ Berkley and Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) amongst the talents that Roger tries to hook Nick up with. As with his excellent but unseen follow-up PS I Love You, Kidd has a gift for making real characters from potential stereotypes, and Roger Dodger is one of the few coming-of-age dramas that avoids clichés and gives a genuine account of the perils of adolescence.
