I The Jury 1982 ***

Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer character has rarely found his feet on the big screen, and this souped-up 1982 thriller doesn’t quite capture his essence, but provides plenty of action along the way thanks to a script by Larry Cohen. Armand Assante protects plenty of Latin charm as Hammer, with Barbara Carrera as the mysterious moll he encounters while tracking down a vicious killer. Hammer’s office, positioned on the edge of a seedy, pre-clean-up Times Square, gives a nice sense of period, and both Bill Conti’s throbbing score and the sustained gunplay evoke the spirit of Spillane’s work to entertaining effect.
