The Groove Tube 1974 ***

Long before The Kentucky Friend Movie unleashed the Airplane brand of humour on an unsuspecting world, sketch movies satirising US television were all the rage, with 1974’s The Groove Tube a prime example. While hit and miss, and a lengthy stoner comedy sequence is definitely a miss, there’s plenty of great work here; Chevy Chase using his head for a version of I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover, Ken Finkleman’s rendition of Just You, Just Me, a prolonged TV news skit and a live report into the degradations of street prostitution that has a Chris Morris feel to it. A reminder that US comedy was not sleeping while the Monty Python storm raged worldwide.
